AAA CALD YOUTH SOCCER TOURNAMENT 2014

As the Youth Coordinator of The Australian Asian Association of WA Inc., I organised the ‘AAA CALD Youth Soccer Tournament 2014’ which was funded by the Department of Sport and Recreation. It was held on Saturday, the 6th September 2014 at Forest Park, Mount Lawley. The Chief Guest, Hon. Michael Sutherland MLA, Member for Mt Lawley representing the Premier the Hon. Colin Barnett MLA, gave a speech and tossed the Coin at 9.30am to commence the match: Afghanistan Vs China.

The Hon. Peter Watson MLA, Shadow Minister for Sport and Recreation representing Hon. Mark McGowan MLA Leader of the Opposition gave a short speech and tossed a coin to commence the match: Fiji Vs Oromo. John Carey Mayor, City of Vincent also gave a short speech and tossed the coin to begin the match: ABC Club Vs Sri-Lanka. Fred Brown, Honorary Consul of Nepal tossed the coin to start match: Nepal Vs Mauritius. All the speakers appreciated organising tournament and conveyed that their support for the culturally and Linguistically Diverse (CALD) Youth Sports Activities will continue in the future as well. Other participating guests: Frank Crowley, Honorary Consul for Sri-Lanka, Dr Bishnu Devkota, President of Nepalese Association, Mr Bhairab Dhakal, ICC member of Non-Resident Nepalese Association, Mr Raj Thapaliya, Vice President of NRN Australia, Saowarak, Thai Association, Ranjit Ratnayke member of WASLA, Haroon, President of Afghanistan, Suman Adhikari from Perth Journal, members from participating teams inspired and encouraged the players.

The Forest Park Pavilion was full of players, friends and families, fans of the Soccer, Community representatives including guests from different social organisations, and government officials. The atmosphere was quite emotive and full of inspiration for the players. The communities were cheering their own teams in a competitive spirit. The participating ten teams were from Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Burma, China, Fiji, Nepal, Mauritius Sri Lanka, Oromo, and Perth Dream. The tournament was played in the League format. Nepal, Vs Burma and Perth Dream Vs Afghanistan, qualified for the Semi-Final. Burma and Perth Dream became the finalists. Perth Dream won the tournament defeating Burma. Gerkler Htoo from Karen Club of Burma was awarded ‘The Best Keeper’.Hamidulla Fidayi from Perth Dream was awarded ‘The Leading Scorer’. Ali Khari from Perth Dream was awarded ‘Man of the Series’.

On behalf of the Organising Committee, I would like to express my sincere gratitude to the Chief Guest, Hon. Michael Sutherland, Guest, Peter Watson, John Carey, and Fred Brown for their presence and Coin Toss at the ‘Opening Ceremony’. I would like to express my sincere gratitude to Frank Crawley, Saowarak, Greg and the many community leaders for their presence at the Opening Ceremony. I would like to convey my sincere appreciation to our President Mr. Rahim Ghauri, Mel Fialho, Ranjit Ratnayake, Dr. Bishnu Devkota, Bhairab Dhakal, Raj Thapalia, for presenting all the Trophies, medals and Certificates of Appreciation to the winners, and umpires including the volunteers. My deep gratitude to Mr Dawa Sherpa, President of Nepalese United Football Club for his contribution as a volunteer referee. My thanks to Gordon Duus and Mathew Cheeseman from Football West for providing Soccer Gear and the referees respectively and Simon Hoang from Western United Football Club for providing soccer nets. We extend our appreciation to diplomatic representatives, members of The Ethnic Communities and government officials who attended the event. We extend our gratitude to journalists Rabindra Hemanta from Himalnews.com and Kamal Timilsina from Hamro Nepali Ineternet, and Suman Adhikari for collecting sport news of the tournament. In particular, I thank the ten teams, umpires and the Soccer fans that contributed to the success of the 3rd AAA Youth Soccer Tournament.
