2016 HARMONY WEEK CULTURAL EVENING for CALD YOUTH at AAA
(Back to Photo Gallery page)

We at AAA celebrated Harmony Day on the 19th of March 2016. Planning this event began in early February and as the Youth Coordinator I took on the task of planning the events for the day. The Executive committee suggested that a Function Committee be set up with members representing various ethnic Communities. This committee met regularly to liaise with other organisations and to structure the programme for the day. The members of the Committee included Mrs Saro Fernando from AAA, Amie President of the Thai Association, Negash from the Eritrean Association, Sanjoy Dhar and Robyn from SVAI Association. Invitations were sent to the Presidents of the various associations informing them of the function and also inviting them to participate by displaying the culture of their country through music and dance.

In response to our invitation we had almost 19 communities from 17 countries participating which reflected the diverse cultures and identities in Australia. We had participants from Nepal, Sri Lanka, India, China, Pakistan, Russia, Burma, Cuba, Indonesia, Vietnam, Oromo, Scotland Brazil, Australia and the Eritrea, Thailand. The program commenced with Amie explaining the Significance of Harmony and AAA President Mrs Marlene Burnaby welcomed the special guests and members of the participating communities. The traditional Lighting of the Lamp was done by Hon Dr Mike Nahan, Hon Ms Alannah MacTiernan and Mrs Olga Ramasamy. The vice president of AAA Mr Melville Fialho, invited Hon Dr Nahan and Hon Ms Janine Freeman to address the communities. A special thank you to all the participants who spent much time and effort for their practice which was evident in the talent displayed that night the performers were presented with Certificates of Appreciation followed by a delicious meal.
I take this opportunity to thank all the participants, their families, members of the Executive committee and the subcommittee, volunteers and all those who have contributed to a memorable evening – Harmony Day 2016.

It was my privileged to propose ‘Votes of Thanks’ to all the guests and participants who attended the function.
Yam K.C., AAA Youth Coordinator
