On behalf of The Australian Asian Association of WA Inc, I organised the ‘AAA Youth Cricket Tournament 2013’ funded by the Department of Communities of Western Australia. It was held on Saturday, 23rd March 2013 at Forest Park, Mount Lawley, in the City of Vincent, to coincide with the National Youth Week 2013. The Chief Guest, Hon. Stephen Smith, M.P. Defence Minister of the Australian Federal Government conducted ‘Opening Ceremony’ by Tossing the Coin at 9am for the first teams NEPAL Vs Pakistan and thanked me and the Association for organising the event for the Culturally and Linguistically Diverse (CALD) Youth as part of the Association’s activity. He expressed a commitment to support sporting events in the future. Other participating guests were, Hon. Alannah Mac Tiernan, Mayor of the City of Vincent and Neil Thomson, Chief Executive Director of the Department of Sports and Recreation who expressed their full support from the department to inspire and encourage cricket players into main stream sports activities.

The Forest Park Pavilion was full with players, their friends, families and fans of the Cricket, Community representatives including guests from different social organisations, and government officials. The atmosphere was quite emotive and full of inspiration for the players. The communities were cheering their own teams in a competitive spirit. The participating teams were Afghanistan, Bangladesh, India, Nepal Pakistan, & Sri Lanka. The tournament was played in the knock-out format. Nepal managed a score of 93/6 against the disciplined bowling attack of Pakistan. In reply Pakistan struggled at the beginning but managed to chase the total with 7 balls remaining. Utsab Thakuri of Nepal was awarded man of the match for his 32 runs and 2 wickets. All the VIPs were impressed with all the teams. India and Sri-Lanka became the finalists. India scored 63 runs which were easily chased by Sri-Lanka with the loss of 2 wickets. Sri-Lanka won the tournament for the 2nd Year in succession. Sri-Lankan bowler, Justin was awarded Player of the tournament for his outstanding bowling attempt.

On behalf of the Organising Committee, I would like to express my sincere gratitude to the Chief Guest Hon. Stephen Smith, Ms Alannah Mac Tiernan, and Neil Thomson for their presence and Coin Toss. Similarly we extend our appreciation to diplomatic representatives, members, ethnic communities and government officials. In particular, we thank the six teams, umpires and the cricket fans that contributed to the success of the 2nd AAA Youth Cricket Tournament.
